TERM 1 2025 Tuesday Afternoon Class
Esther Gane Scratch Art
Service Description
NOTE: this starts in week 3 (18 February). I'm missing the beginning of the term because I'm getting married! Woohoo! This term, we will be learning about the Kiwi artist, Esther Gain. Esther Gain makes super realistic pictures of animals using a type of art called scratchboard. Scratchboard art requires the artist to use sharp knives to scratch their art into a soft base of clay and ink. We will be drawing our inspiration from Esther Gain's scratchboard technique but recreating it without all the knives! Over a four week period, kids will choose an animal and draw it in its habitat. They will then use pastels to bring their animals to life with vibrant colours, before painting over the whole thing with black paint. Finally, we will use a variety of scratching tools to carefully scrape away the black paint, revealing our animals hiding underneath! We will work on scratching different patterns and textures to give our art some more interest. It's always so great getting to work with a small group of kids over a number of weeks. It's a cool way to experience different forms of art and make some new friends at the same time. I hope you can join us!
